Pastel Crayons
Pastel crayons are available as dry pastel and oil pastel. The dry pastel crayon is completely free of wax and oil and therefore has a very intense colour. This also makes it very sensitive to touch and a finished pastel drawing is best displayed under glass. To make your drawing more durable, we recommend spraying it with a fixative, which you can find in our other range. Just as it sounds, oil pastels contain oil and therefore adhere much better to paper (but also to other materials).
The popularity of pastels has had its peaks and troughs throughout history, with the first surge of popularity coming during the Romantic era, when they work well for soft, subtle landscapes and light depictions. Later, the French artist Edgar Degas revived pastels and inspired the Impressionists who came after him to use this medium.
